Why Do You Need to Maintain a Sump Pump?

A working sump pump is essential for preventing basement flooding during heavy rainstorms or snowy winters.

Many homes in the Chicago area have a basin underneath the basement floor to collect excess water. A sump pump monitors the water levels in this basin and pumps excess water out of the house when water levels rise too high. When your sump pump works correctly, it prevents flooding from happening even in extreme weather.

Sump pumps have a lifespan of approximately seven to 10 years. Proactive maintenance and replacement are critical to keeping your home safe and dry during heavy precipitation.

Even if your sump pump is working, replacing it before the 10-year mark is best to avoid unexpected issues. Professional inspection and maintenance should be done at least once yearly to ensure minor problems do not escalate.

Common Sump Pump Issues

Call our team immediately to prevent permanent damage if you notice any of these issues in your home.

  • Frequent Cycling

Damaged sump pumps often start cycling frequently, turning on and off very quickly in a short period of time. This will eventually wear out the entire system.

There are a few reasons why your sump pump could be cycling frequently. If the float switch is stuck, the pump will incorrectly measure the water level and force the pump to run constantly. Frequent cycling also happens as a result of a worn-out check valve.

  • Noisy Operation

A sump pump that generates excess noise can be very irritating, even when working correctly. There are a variety of reasons why your sump pump might be making too much noise. This often happens when debris gets into the pump and damages the impeller, knocking it off balance.

Excess noise can also happen when air gets trapped in the sump pump, causing an airlock. Airlocks aren’t just noisy - they also prevent the pump from working properly and can result in flooding.

  • Failure to Start or Run

If your sump pump won’t turn on or isn’t running properly, it may be a sign of electrical issues. Check to ensure the pump is properly plugged in and the outlet is working. This can also happen due to a broken float switch on the pump.

  • Inadequate Pumping

If your sump basin frequently overflows, your pump might not have the capacity to handle the volume of water flowing out of your home. Upgrading to a larger pump often solves this problem.

Inadequate pumping can also happen as a result of clogged or frozen discharge pipes. When dirt and debris get into these pipes, it prevents water from flowing outward. It’s also possible for the pipes to freeze during the winter months, resulting in a blockage.

Preventative Measures

Even if your sump pump doesn’t have visible problems, it’s still crucial to conduct preventative maintenance. Your pump should be professionally inspected and maintained every year. Homeowners can also keep their sump pump working longer by regularly testing and cleaning it.

Thomas and the team at Chicago Sewer and Drain are absolute lifesavers!

As a longtime Berwyn resident, I had relied on Greg Hannah Plumbing for years. Just before Christmas, our basement toilet stopped flushing, so I called them for help. They came out, charged us $600, but weeks later, the same issue returned. At that point, I knew there had to be a deeper problem.

After an exhaustive search—reading reviews and speaking with different contractors—I found Chicago Sewer and Drain. Their team performed a thorough cleanout of our main line. Thomas, who led the crew, was fantastic—personable, professional, and kept us informed every step of the way.

The result? A completely cleared system and toilets that flush better than they have since we bought the house. I can’t say enough good things about this team!

If you need plumbing work done, call these guys first. They’re professional, communicative, and get the job done right the first time. Highly recommend!

I can’t recommend Chicago Sewer and Drain enough!

Thomas and his team are incredibly professional and have excellent communication. From start to finish, the process was fantastic. They were extremely reasonable for the amount of work performed and went above and beyond my expectations.

I recently bought a multifamily building in Chicago and was dealing with serious plumbing issues. Thomas was able to come out the same day to inspect the problem. He carefully examined the catch basin and drain lines, identifying issues with the pitch and an improperly installed grease trap. His knowledge and expertise, especially in sewer work, were impressive—far beyond what you’d expect from a typical plumbing company.

He recommended hydro-jetting the main kitchen line and sewer line, which included a sewer scope. While performing the work, they uncovered a severe block caused by bricks of grease from previous years of neglected maintenance. Thomas clearly outlined next steps and provided multiple options to address the issue with minimal disruption.

They ended up power rodding from both the kitchen and catch basin to get through the blockage, followed by another round of hydro-jetting with a camera to ensure everything was cleared.

Thomas is reliable, patient, and took the time to explain everything in an easy to understand way. If you’re in Chicago and need a plumbing expert—especially for sewer work—Chicago Sewer and Drain is the company to call. I’ll be using them for all future plumbing jobs!

Use this company. Period. They are absolute life savers. Long story short we bought our home recently and have had 3 major plumbing issues. For the last and biggest issue we called Chicago Sewer and Drain Professionals. They identified the source of our sewage backup in minutes. ABC wanted to take off our entire toilet off to get access to identify the problem. This company is reliable, trustworthy, and very very good. There prices are great as well. This was a fantastic father-son team that you simply just don’t see this type of work anymore. I will use them anything goes wrong and plan on recommending them to all of my friends and family.

I had a clogged sink that I tried to fix myself and couldn't get it with my snake and drain-o. It wasn't an emergency like a broken pipe but a kitchen sink is pretty important. Tech was in my kitchen on a Saturday within the hour. Price was reasonable, quick service, problem fixed.
Will use again and highly recommend.
